ABOUT SOURCESWAP

Find software worth
switching to.

An independent directory and research hub for open-source, self-hosted, and privacy-respecting software. Tested on real hardware, written by one person.

OUR PREMISE

More than just an
alternative directory.

What started as personal migration notes on bare-metal hardware has grown into an independent publication dedicated to digital ownership.

Our story

I started SourceSwap with a clear goal: to make leaving subscription software realistic. What began as a personal effort to escape closed SaaS platforms became a collection of hands-on benchmarks, testing where open-source tools thrive and where they fall short.

I believe software should be useful because it works—not because proprietary databases or closed sync servers made you dependent on it.

Our mission

SourceSwap is committed to providing independent, evidence-backed research that simplifies the switch to open-source and self-hosted tools.

Every recommendation is tested on physical machines with real workloads. We document the data export pathways, memory overhead, and daily trade-offs so you can build a software stack you genuinely own.

THE STANDARDS

How tools earn
a spot here.

I don't scrape marketing pages or publish sponsored reviews. Every tool is installed, tested, and evaluated against four simple rules before I recommend it.

RULE 01

Works without the internet

If an app stops working because your Wi-Fi went down or someone else's login server had an outage, it doesn't belong here. Local-first isn't a bonus feature—it's the baseline.

LOCAL-FIRST
RULE 02

You can leave anytime

Your notes, databases, and files should live in standard formats like Markdown or SQLite. Getting your data out should take a few clicks, not an afternoon of writing migration scripts.

DATA PORTABILITY
RULE 03

Truly open source

No bait-and-switch licenses or open-core traps where basic features require an enterprise tier. If a project claims to be open, the code should be genuinely free to inspect and run.

OSI LICENSED
RULE 04

Tested on actual machines

I install each tool on physical hardware to check how much RAM it eats on idle, whether sync handles real file conflicts, and what breaks under ordinary, everyday use.

SourceSwap is completely independent. There are no investors to please, no affiliate kickbacks, and nobody can pay to rank higher in the directory or get favorable coverage.

I started this project because everyday software has quietly turned into permanent rent. Notes get locked inside proprietary databases, cloud sync services hold personal files hostage, and leaving a platform gets harder every year.

Before I recommend any tool, I install it on physical hardware and use it under real workloads. If an open-source tool works well, I highlight it. If the sync client consumes excessive memory, drops files, or takes three hours of troubleshooting to set up, I catalog that honestly under the trade-offs.

I don't scrape trending lists or copy marketing pages. A tool earns a place only if it genuinely solves an everyday problem, maintains an active codebase, runs reliably on local hardware, and gives users straightforward data export options. Every recommendation is tested against real workloads first.

No. Placements, directory spots, verified badges, and reviews cannot be bought. I don't run paid sponsorships, take vendor kickbacks, or use affiliate links that reward recommending one platform over another. If an app has flaws or high setup friction, it gets cataloged under the trade-offs.

It gets audited immediately. If a project switches away from an OSI-approved license to a restrictive source-available license, or introduces non-consensual telemetry, the listing is updated with a prominent advisory warning or removed entirely.

Yes. If you build or use an open-source, local-first, or self-hosted tool that respects user data, you can submit it through our submission page. I review every submission and install eligible tools on the test bench.

SourceSwap is funded entirely out of pocket by me. Because the site is engineered as an ultra-fast static build hosted on Cloudflare Pages edge CDN with zero client-side tracking, server operating costs remain negligible. Independence is prioritized over monetizing readers.
